Things to Avoid During Pregnancy

You’re pregnant! You probably already know that it is extremely important to be mindful of what you put into your bodies at this special time. The first things that usually come to mind are foods or drinks, but did you know that your beauty products are also absorbed into your body?

Most of us, when we are slathering on our body lotions, aren’t concerned or aware of what could be being absorbed into our bloodstreams. When you’re growing a baby inside you, this is an important concern!.

While most ingredients used in products are safe, here is a list of harmful ingredients to your budding bundle of joy.

Avoid During Pregnancy

Salicylic Acid

Commonly used to treat acne, and can be found in toners, cleansers, and moisturizers. This mild acid gets deep into the pores and helps to clean them out. Salicylic acid is in the Aspirin family, so high doses of this ingredient can cause harm. Professionals say that using it twice a day in your toner or cleanser is fine, but it is best to speak to your doctor first if you want to use a product with salicylic acid in it.

This wonderful ingredient is found in many anti-aging products. It is a type of vitamin A that helps to speed up your skin cell renewal and prevents collagen loss.
Though this ingredient is wonderful for wrinkles, it is best to avoid during pregnancy. Some studies have shown that high doses of vitamin A is harmful to unborn babies. If you are on an acne treatment like Accutane, it is highly suggested to get off of it during pregnancy.

These fillers haven’t had any adequate studies to show that they are harmful to unborn babies, but it is best to avoid them. If you are used to getting them for your lips, there are non-injectable substitutes, such as the CandyLipz lip plumper, which uses a suction pressure to add volume to the lips.

Nail Polish

It is generally safe to do your nails and use nail polish remover during pregnancy. However, it is best to find a nail polish that is 3-free, meaning it doesn’t contain DBP (dibutyl phthalate), toluene and formaldehyde. These are toxic ingredients that may cause hormone production problems in the fetus.
It is also best to do your nails in a well-ventilated area, so you are not breathing in harmful fumes. Once the nail polish is dry, it is harmless.

SAFE TO USE – make sure to get a 3-free nail polish

Hair Colouring

Researchers have not studied the effects of hair dye on expectant mothers, but most doctors suggest to avoid them. Off the scalp, highlights should be fine, as the bleach is never absorbed into the skin. Though, if you have to color your hair, avoid dyes and treatments that contain ammonia, their fumes can cause you to feel sick. Make sure to get your hair.
