Cord tissue is an additional source of hematopoietic stem cells as well as mesenchymal stem cells. It can be banked as a future source of stem cells for tissue regeneration. Cord tissue also contains endothelial and epithelial cells that may prove to be beneficial for treatment. More than 90cc of cord tissue should be collected and processed within 2 hours of birth to obtain the highest number of stem cells.

There are special techniques to obtain the highest number of these stem cells such as scraping out Wharton’s jelly, isolation, the culture of cord tissue explants and venous epithelium cells. Then they are expanded in vitro to promote a good yield of cells.

The cells can be used for different types of therapies if the institute has an efficient way of obtaining the cells. Cord tissue stem cells are currently being studied in the treatment of lung cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, and cartilage injuries in sports. Placenta Tissue

The placenta is an organ of utmost importance for the growth and protection of the fetus inside the uterus. The only bank which offers placenta tissue storage is “Americord”, where the stem cells aren’t only used to protect the child, but the mother too.
